Zebra TC2x Series Guide (TC21/26, TC22/27): Specs, Part Numbers & Value Tier Upgrades

The Zebra TC2x series, including the widely adopted TC21/TC26 and the current generation TC22/TC27, represents Zebra’s line of affordable rugged mobile computers built in a familiar smartphone style. These devices are specifically designed to provide businesses, particularly Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) and those in retail, hospitality, and light T&L/field service, a durable and capable alternative to consumer-grade smartphones. This guide covers the key features across recent generations, helps identify models and part numbers, and discusses upgrade paths, especially relevant as the TC21/TC26 reach end-of-sale status.

Key Features of the Zebra TC2x Series

Designed to offer essential enterprise features in a cost-effective package, the TC2x series includes:

  • Operating System: Android OS with Google Mobile Services (GMS). TC21/TC26 typically run Android versions up to 11+ (with potential for later upgrades via conversion packages). The newer TC22/TC27 ship with Android 11+ and are upgradeable to Android 16, offering a much longer lifespan for security and feature updates.
  • Value-Tier Ruggedness: Built to handle workplace realities better than consumer phones. They typically withstand 4-5 ft (1.2-1.5m) drops to concrete (often with an optional protective boot) and feature IP65, IP67, or IP68 sealing against dust and water splashes/immersion.
  • Compact Smartphone Form Factor: Lightweight and pocketable design familiar to users, making adoption easier.
  • Integrated Barcode Scanning: Includes built-in 1D/2D scan engines suitable for various tasks.
    • TC21/TC26 Options: Often feature the SE4100 (basic performance) or SE4710 (standard performance) imagers. Camera-based scanning is possible on scanner-less configurations.
    • TC22/TC27 Options: Offer the SE4710 (standard range) or the SE55 Advanced Range scan engine with IntelliFocus™ technology for more demanding scanning needs.
  • Display: Capacitive touchscreens with Corning® Gorilla® Glass.
    • TC21/TC26: 5-inch HD (1280×720) display.
    • TC22/TC27: Larger, brighter 6-inch FHD+ (1080×2160) display.
  • Connectivity: Both Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + WWAN/Cellular models are available across generations.
    • TC21/TC26: 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), Bluetooth 5.0 BLE. TC26 includes 4G LTE.
    • TC22/TC27: Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2. TC27 adds 5G and 4G LTE capabilities.
  • Battery: Removable PowerPrecision Li-Ion batteries. Standard (~3100-3800mAh) and extended (~5200-5400mAh) capacity options are generally available for full-shift or multi-shift power.
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. TC21/TC26 use the capable SD660 octa-core. TC22/TC27 feature a significantly faster Qualcomm 5430 hex-core processor.

Identifying Your Zebra TC2x Model and Part Number

Knowing your device’s exact Manufacturer Part Number (MPN or SKU) is crucial for getting the right accessories, support, or replacements. Look for the label, typically under the battery.

  • Models & Generations:
    • TC20/TC25: Older, End of Life.
    • TC21 (WLAN) / TC26 (WWAN): Mature generation. End-of-Sale was Feb 28, 2025. Support continues until March 31, 2028.
    • TC22 (WLAN) / TC27 (WWAN): Current Generation, replacing TC21/TC26.
  • Part Number Structure: Encodes details like base model, scanner type (e.g., A=SE4710, J=SE4100, C=SE55?), memory/storage (e.g., 2=3GB/32GB, 4=4GB/64GB, 6=6GB/64GB, 8=8GB/128GB), battery type, connectivity options (WLAN/WWAN), rear connector type (2-pin/8-pin), region (NA, A6=ROW?), etc. Healthcare versions (-HC) also exist.
  • Example Part Numbers (Illustrative Only – Always Check Your Device):
    • TC210K-01A222-NA (TC21 WLAN, SE4710?, 3GB/32GB?, Std Batt?, 2-Pin?, NA)
    • TC26BK-11B212-A6 (TC26 WWAN, SE4100?, 3GB/32GB?, Basic Batt?, ROW)
    • WCMTA-T22B6ABC2-NA (TC22 WLAN, 6GB/64GB, SE4710?, Std Batt?, 2-Pin, NA) – Illustrative
    • WCMTA-T27B8CBD8-A6 (TC27 WWAN/5G, 8GB/128GB, SE55?, Ext Batt?, 8-Pin, ROW) – Illustrative

Use the specific MPN when searching for compatible charging cables, cradles, batteries, trigger handles, screen protectors, or software updates.

Is It Time to Repair, Replace, or Upgrade Your TC2x?

If you use TC20/TC25 devices, upgrading is essential due to their EOL status. For TC21/TC26 users, while support continues until early 2028, these models are no longer available for new purchase as of February 2025. Now is an ideal time to plan a transition to avoid future disruptions and gain significant advantages.

The current generation TC22/TC27 offers compelling reasons to upgrade:

  • Much Larger, Higher Resolution Display: Improved visibility and more screen real estate (6″ FHD+ vs 5″ HD).
  • Faster Performance: Significantly quicker processor for smoother app performance.
  • Modern OS & Longer Support: Starts on a newer Android version with guaranteed upgrades to Android 16.
  • Superior Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E and 5G options for faster, more reliable wireless performance.
  • Advanced Scanning Option: Available SE55 engine for longer range scanning needs.

The TC2x series remains Zebra’s entry-level rugged offering. If your needs demand higher ruggedness, more processing power, or physical keypads, consider the TC5x, TC7x, or MC series.
